Implemented by BAMIN’s Education with Communities Program in collaboration with the Higher Institute of Sustainability (ISUS) and the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC), the Amigos da Natureza (Friends of Nature) Project engaged public schools in Ilhéus throughout the year. The project aimed to foster education and promote good environmental practices in schools and the surrounding areas of Porto Sul. In 2023, over 20 activities were conducted, positively impacting nearly 600 individuals, including students and teachers.
Working alongside the heads of municipal schools in Vila Juerana, Vila São José, Carobeira, Sambaituba, and Aritaguá in Ilhéus, a schedule of activities was developed based on commemorative dates in the Environmental Calendar. These activities focused on playful dynamics, involving not only students but also teachers and staff from educational institutions. Together, they addressed topics related to the wild fauna of the southern region of Bahia.
Thirteen interactive activities centered on the theme of recycling were organized throughout the year. The goal was to encourage the reduction, separation, reuse, and recycling of recyclable and organic waste within and outside the schools. Students were assigned three tasks: collecting recyclable materials for designated collection bags at the school, participating in a drawing competition on the theme of solid waste, and creating toys from recyclable materials. A total of 339 students participated in these activities.
In addition, municipal schools in Ilhéus undertook activities related to Wild Fauna, with eight actions occurring in 2023 involving 241 students. Using a game called “What is what?” ecological dynamics were employed to educate students about wild animals. The objective was to share information and characteristics about species of the Atlantic Forest’s wild fauna with children, emphasizing the importance of preserving these species and the entire ecosystem.
