the pedra de ferro mine project

This represents the most important iron ore mining project being developed in Bahia. In its planning, the mine includes ore extraction, beneficiation, and logistics solutions involving rail and sea transportation. At this time, operations are producing premium quality ore on a small scale, with high purity content (65% Fe), allowing us to reduce the CO2 emissions produced in the steelmaking process. Current production capacity can reach 2 million tons per year, with dry processing of Hematite – which does not generate tailings and does not use water during the process. BAMIN will invest heavily in a globally known Dry Stacking tailings filtering process, which will eliminate the need to use dams for the disposal of tailings that are produced by ore beneficiation, providing even greater safety for employees and local communities. The Pedra de Ferro Mine will become a reference point for technology and sustainability for the projects of the similar kind.

The project consists of three stretches that will connect the city of Ilhéus (in the state of Bahia) to Figueirópolis (located in the state of Tocantins), with a total distance of 1,527 km. Stretch 1, known as FIOL I (between Caetité and Ilhéus), was acquired in an auction, and will measure 537 km in distance. In September 2021, BAMIN signed the concession contract (covering a period of 35 years) with the Ministry of Infrastructure (MINFRA). The project’s route will take it through 19 municipalities and should handle up to 60 million tons per year – with 60% of this capacity to be made available to other mining companies, in the agribusiness space and other sectors. The investment is estimated to be worth R$ 5.5 billion, reflecting five years of construction and three decades of operations. This stretch will constitute an important logistics integration and export corridor for the country, and is already among the largest infrastructure projects being advanced in Brazil. The Ministry of Infrastructure estimates that the project will create 55 thousand direct and indirect jobs. Stretch 2 links Caetité and Barreiras (a distance of 485 km) and Stretch 3 begins at Barreiras and terminates at Figueirópolis (a distance of 505 km). Both stretches are being administered by the Federal Government.

The construction of the Porto Sul forms a key tenet of BAMIN’s integrated logistics activities and will become on of the main import-export points in the region. The completion of a bridge connecting the BA-001 highway to the future industrial area of the port has advanced the access works and we expect that the port will enter operation in 2027, with a terminal physically and technologically structured to accommodate ships of up to 250 thousand tons. Although is the project is still under construction, BAMIN has already implemented, and continues to improve the socio-environmental management governing the venture, creating rigorous safety processes aligned with international ESG standards. The South Port already encompasses 34 programs, 11 of which address social issues and 21 of which serve to protect the environment. Among these actions, the CETRAS – Wild Animal Screening and Rehabilitation Center of the Porto Sul – built in 2018, has secured recognition for its important work monitoring and conserving wild flora and fauna.
